The Sussex County Council, made up of 3 Democrats and 2 Republicans was dealt a startling blow last week. The three Democrats who were up for re-election this year announced that were not running for re-election. This announcement was made a week before the filing deadline. The two Republicans are not up for re-election this year.
The three retirees made up the council majority for the last 10 years. The Republicans had two strong candidates, but left the third seat uncontested until the announcement. Now it appears that the Republicans should gain control of the council, having only 1 of three races to win.
Good things that happened in the last 10 years:
1. Property taxes have not increased.
2. The county is mostly debt free.
Bad things that happened in the last 10 years:
1. County employees increased foom 150 to more than 600.
2. Growth has not been managed in the best way.
This should be a really telling election on the national, state, and local level!!!
