Nanticoke Creek Watchers
Last week marked the start of the second season for the Nanticoke River Creekwatchers. The program has been a great success. Last year 30 volunteers monitored 25 sites on the Nanticoke River and its tributaries. This year the effort has expanded to 40 sites with 35+ volunteers. Last year's work will serve as a benchmark, and all future sampling should be an accurate view to the quality of the river system.
The trained teams of volunteer scientists will measure on-site: water clarity, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH and water temperature - using field instruments. They also collect water samples for laboratory analysis of nutrients, chlorophyll and bacteria.
The program is run by the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance, which is a consortium of almost 40 organizations that include government agencies, environmental groups, land trusts, academia, restoration groups, industry, small businesses, realtors, forest and fishing industries, and citizen groups.

The Georgia House is Coming!!!
Laurel is finally getting a nice restaurant. Since RJ Riverside closed last Summer, the selection of eating establishments was sorely diminished. A local Sussex County chain The Georgia House is going to occupy the old RJ's site. I no longer have to travel to get their great Pretzel Salad.
