The Delaware Way--Make Things Easier for the Taxpayer
I went to vote in the Laurel School referendum. I got to the High School at 8:20 am. The doors were locked, so I went to the office and was told that the Polls open at 10 am. Polls were open at 7 am for other elections. So I went to work, then to a meeting at 6 pm that lasted until 7:30. I raced from Seaford, only to be diverted off of Rt. 13A because of an accident. I made it to the polls with 2 minutes to spare. I had to fill out a form in order to vote, which was not a requirement in other elections. The County knows what school district I live in, they send me bills. I was almost disenfranchised, but certainly inconvenienced by the whole system concocted by the Board of Elections.
A co-worker walked by my car yesterday and told me my tags had expired. That was news to me, I got no notice that my car registration expired. I received a notice when my drivers’ license expired. So I went to the DMV, passed inspection, and paid my fee. The funny thing was that the fee per year had doubled and I had to pay another $10.00 for being late. I have to hand it to the DMV. Who else would have thought up such a scheme? I mean, the state needs money, right? So let’s double our fees-- and now the coup de gras. Let’s stop sending notices about expiring registrations, hoping not everyone checks their license plate daily, and then charge them another $10.00. Gee, we save printing the notice, mailing the notice, and we make another $10.00.
